This Victorian Scottish oak tilt-top parlour table dates to circa 1890 in the country house style. The piece presents a medium brown timber with warm caramel hues, fine grain interest, medullary rays, and a desirable aged patina. A wide rounded rectangular top sits on an articulated mechanism with a brass latch on the reverse, supported by a broad turned central pedestal column. The base comprises a trio of long cabriole legs terminating in brass casters. Measuring 73 cm high, 101.5 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the table provides a practical surface for occasional dining or a game of cards. In a modern home, it serves well as an occasional table at the end of a sofa or in a living room, ready for daily use with solid joints and construction.

Tilt-top tables were designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as space-saving occasional furniture for parlours and drawing rooms. The hinged top allowed the surface to fold vertically, enabling the piece to be stored neatly against a room perimeter when not in use for tea or refreshments.

Scottish cabinetmakers frequently utilized locally sourced native oak, known for its dense grain and durable structural properties. Construction methods relied on hand-turned central pedestals, dovetail jointing on tilting blocks, and hand-forged brass catch mechanisms alongside splayed tripod legs.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature iron or brass spring latches beneath the tabletop, hand-turned pedestal columns, and original brass casters secured to the feet. Inspecting the underside reveals uneven saw marks and naturally aged timber oxidisation consistent with Victorian craftsmanship.

These versatile tables serve effectively as occasional side tables placed beside armchairs or sofas to hold lighting and literature. Alternatively, they can be displayed with the top tilted vertically against a wall or in a fireplace alcove as a functional decorative feature.

Maintain the surface by applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the wood grain every six to twelve months, followed by buffing with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid placing the timber in direct proximity to modern heat sources or damp environments to prevent splitting or warping.
