This Georgian drop-flap table dates to 1800 and adopts the Pembroke style. The piece uses satinwood from the West Indies with rosewood banding and a lighter satinwood central oval inlay on the top, displaying a warm brown colour palette. Details visible include a single frieze drawer fitted with original gilt brass ring handles, square tapered legs standing on original castors, and dark contrasting stringing outlining the oval top. The table measures 96 cm wide when fully open, with a closed length of 75 cm and width of 45 cm. In a modern interior, the table suits placement as an end table by the side of a sofa or serves various roles in reception spaces and hallways. The drop-leaf design allows the surface area to adjust according to daily needs, making it practical for compact living areas while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

A Pembroke table is a versatile type of drop-leaf table designed in Britain during the eighteenth century, named after the Countess of Pembroke who original commissioned the design. It features two folding flaps supported by wooden brackets, a frieze drawer, and slender legs, allowing it to function as both a compact accent piece and an expanded writing or tea table.

Cabinetmakers during the Georgian era predominantly used solid mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood, frequently embellishing surfaces with decorative crossbanding, boxwood stringing, and geometric wood veneers. Hardware typically comprised cast brass drop handles or ring pulls alongside solid brass castors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside the frieze drawer, hand-planed underside surfaces, and signs of natural timber shrinkage resulting in slight asymmetry. Original wooden fly-rail hinges or swivel brackets beneath the drop leaves also indicate period construction.

An antique Pembroke table functions well as an occasional side table placed beside a sofa, positioned within an entryway, or integrated into a reading nook. Keep the tabletop minimalist with a small ceramic lamp or decorative tray to display the underlying wood marquetry and patination.

To preserve satinwood veneers and wood inlays, place the table away from direct sunlight and central heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, following the direction of the wood grain.
