Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Carved floral frieze and cabriole legs: export work from the late Qing period.
Four-piece circular frame around the inset marble: standard construction for nineteenth-century stands.
Softening to the beaded edge and high relief: many years of handling.
Dark, settled oxidisation in the recesses: long exposure to ambient air.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Chinese vase or urn stand belongs to the Meiji period style and is made from dark brown hardwood with an inset pink rouge marble top. The round top features a beaded rim and an openwork carved floral apron, supported by cabriole legs linked with cross stretchers. The timber displays a rich dark brown colour with a visible patina. It stands 30 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Suitable for use in an empty corner or a sunlit conservatory, the stand provides a stable surface to display decorative vases, urns, or potted plants. Its compact proportions allow it to fit onto side tables or window sills while providing a decorative focal point through its intricate woodwork.

FAQs

Meiji period stands, produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912, are recognised for dense dark hardwood craftsmanship, intricate hand-carved openwork aprons, and central inset marble tops often exported to Western markets.

These pieces were typically constructed using dense East Asian hardwoods such as rosewood or hongmu, combined with polished pink, grey, or white variegated marble inserts held by mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic period stands display signs of hand-carving with subtle variations in detail, natural wear along structural joints, heavy unweighted timber, and hand-cut stone borders without modern adhesives.

A carved marble stand functions effectively as a plant pedestal, an elevated surface for sculptural ceramics, or an accent side table in contemporary or eclectic living spaces.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax annually to preserve the timber finish, while cleaning the marble top using only pH-neutral stone cleaners to prevent etching.
