This French Second Empire inkwell dates to 1870 and takes an urn form. It combines turned beige marble with gilt bronze mounts, featuring a round stepped base, horizontal raised mouldings around the body, and a matching domed cover. The hardware includes two lion mask side mounts with hanging ring handles, and a small female bust finial atop the lid which serves as a handle for opening. The gilt bronze sections also include an acanthus leaf decorated stem above the foot and a foliate panel on the cover. Surface wear is visible with patina variations on the metal components. Measuring 14 cm high, 8.5 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, this piece suits placement on a desk in an office or gentleman's library. It holds ink for writing or functions purely as a decorative desk accessory in a traditional study interior.

During the 19th century, French inkwells were frequently designed as classical urns or architectural sculptures, combining finely chased gilt bronze mounts with turned marble or alabaster bodies to serve as luxury desktop functional art.

Craftsmen typically utilised cast bronze with gilt or patinated finishes, paired with imported marble, alabaster, or glass, often containing removable porcelain or glass inner liners to hold liquid ink.

Authentic period examples feature hand-chased surface detailing, appropriate wear to the gilding in high-touch areas, threaded rod internal assembly rather than modern screws, and substantial physical weight.

Place the piece on an executive desk, a styled bookshelf, or a hallway console table alongside framed art and leather-bound books to add historic texture and interest.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and avoid liquid polish or chemical cleaners, which can strip historic gilding or etch natural stone surfaces.
