FAQs

Torcheres and plant stands evolved from tall candle stands used in the 17th and 18th centuries to illuminate rooms, later transitioning into decorative pedestals for displaying botanical specimens and sculptures during the Victorian period.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring turned central shafts, curved cabriole or tripod legs, and hand-joined tiers assembled with traditional mortise and tenon or dowel joints.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber for natural patina, oxidation, hand-cut joinery, tool marks on the underside, and fixings consistent with 19th-century cabinet making rather than modern mass production.

A multi-tiered stand functions effectively as a vertical accent in an empty corner, providing space to display trailing houseplants, ceramics, or framed photographs without occupying a large footprint.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, and clean periodically using a soft cloth and micro-crystalline wax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
