FAQs

Antique wooden games boxes gained popularity during the 19th century as parlour entertainment became a staple of middle and upper-class households, often combining multiple board games into a single portable compendium.

These boxes were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring dovetailed joints, hand-inlaid veneer marquetry for the playing surfaces, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine age-related patination on the wood, traditional hand-applied French polish finishes, and cast iron or brass latches consistent with 19th-century manufacturing.

This piece can be styled closed on a coffee table or sideboard to add textual warmth and a touch of historical interest, or displayed open to showcase the intricate inlaid board as a focal point.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent warping, occasionally treating the surface with microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
