Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Mitred frame-and-panel top: traditional joinery allowing for timber movement.
Hand-carved scroll spandrels: late Qing Dynasty decorative work.
Darker patina in the carved recesses: accumulated wax and age.
Soft rubbing on the edges and feet: domestic wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Chinese altar table is made from dark brown elm and hardwood in a traditional Chinese style. The piece takes the form of a narrow console table, standing 87 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. It comprises a rectangular framed panel top above a structured frieze fitted with carved corner spandrels, resting upon reeded square legs with square feet. Such a table suits placement in a hallway beside the front door or in a gentleman's library. The timber displays a rich dark brown colour throughout, with subtle grain variations visible across the top surface and the linear details of the legs.

FAQs

Historically placed in family shrines and reception halls for ancestral veneration, Chinese altar tables feature narrow proportions designed to hold incense burners, offerings, and decorative items against a wall.

These tables are constructed from dense hardwoods such as Elm or Walnut using complex mortise and tenon joinery without metal nails, finished with frame-and-panel tops.

Authentic examples feature traditional wooden joinery, natural wear along the base of the legs, hand-carved apron spandrels, and original lacquer patination.

Position the narrow table in an entryway, hallway, or behind a sofa as a statement console, pairing its linear form with modern artwork, table lamps, or minimal ceramic vessels.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and moisture variations, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax annually.
