Seventeenth-century wood appliques were typically hand-carved to adorn high-end cabinetry, mantelpieces, and architectural joinery, reflecting the ornate craftsmanship of the Baroque period.

These pieces were traditionally hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut using gouges and chisels, often finished with natural wax to nourish the grain.

Authenticity is determined by tool marks consistent with hand-working, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, dry oxidation of the wood surface, and historic fixing methods.

Antique fragments can be mounted on linen shadow boxes as wall art, displayed on custom metal stands on a console table, or integrated into bespoke joinery.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the finish without clogging the carved details.
