This architectural salvage piece is a sixteenth-century oak carving from a sideboard, created in a Tudor folk art style within the East Anglia region. The dark brown timber object takes a narrow rectangular form finished with a naive relief carving of an anthropomorphic face at the top. The surface displays prominent horizontal geometric banding, square motifs, vertical grooves, and small drilled holes running along the lower section, alongside visible surface wear appropriate for removed furniture elements. This object measures 16.6 cm high by 4 cm wide and 3.4 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item functions well as a decorative object placed on a bookshelf to bring rustic farmhouse character into a living space or study. The naive facial expression and geometric details offer a tangible connection to early British woodworking traditions. The dark tone integrates smoothly with natural wood surfaces or neutral shelving arrangements.

During the 16th century, English woodwork shifted from late Gothic influences to Renaissance humanism and local folk traditions. Carvings often featured naive human forms, mythical motifs, and geometric patterns executed directly into native timber.

Native English oak was the primary timber chosen due to its durability, abundance, and dense grain. Carvers utilised gouges and chisels to construct relief panels, architectural brackets, and furniture mounts.

Authentic pieces display deep oxidisation, shrink marks around joint pegs, and tool impressions from hand chisels. The timber often exhibits a dark patina acquired from centuries of wax application and environmental exposure.

Mounting the timber fragment on a minimalist metal stand creates a striking sculpture for a bookshelf or console table. Placing historic wooden artefacts against neutral plaster walls highlights their textural qualities.

Keep the timber in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust gently with a soft brush and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the surface patina.
