FAQs

Nineteenth-century picture frames often featured elaborate hand-carved motifs reflecting historical revival styles, such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Elizabethan influences, utilised to complement formal portraits and oil paintings.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like oak or walnut, featuring intricate hand-carved relief work, mitred corner joints, and traditional joinery techniques appropriate to the period.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks left by hand-carving, the oxidisation and patina of the wood, traditional corner construction, and signs of age-related wear such as shrinkage and minor abrasions.

An antique frame adds textural contrast and warmth to contemporary spaces when used to frame botanical prints, mirrors, or modern abstract art, creating an effective juxtaposition of old and new.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally apply specialist microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface.
