This nineteenth-century French Victorian taxidermy dome features a composition of nine exotic multi-coloured birds arranged upon a branch within a glass cloche. The display includes preserved feathered specimens nestled among green leafy foliage, mounted over a circular wooden base decorated with marquetry inlay and a twisted silk braid trim around the perimeter. The dark wooden base incorporates golden floral and scrollwork marquetry motifs. Standing 65 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, the entire piece sits on small turned feet. Today, this decorative taxidermy object serves as an eye-catching display piece suitable for placement on a mantelpiece or side table in a living room, study, or hallway. The original glass dome protects the delicate interior arrangement, allowing the detailed plumage and naturalistic foliage to be viewed from all angles while adding character and historical interest to an interior space.

During the nineteenth century, natural history displays mounted beneath hand-blown glass domes became prominent decorative accents in domestic interiors, reflecting scientific curiosity and fascination with exotic flora and fauna.

These displays typically feature hand-blown glass cloches, turned or marquetry-inlaid timber bases, taxidermy bird specimens, artificial foliage, and decorative cord trim.

Authentic period pieces feature blown glass domes with minor glass bubbles or irregularities, era-appropriate wire mounting techniques, patinated wooden bases, and natural ageing on the specimens.

Position the piece as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a glass display cabinet alongside vintage volumes and classical brass objects.

Position the display away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, keep in a stable environment free from high humidity, and clean the glass dome gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
