This large Georgian wine cooler takes a sarcophagus form in warm brown mahogany. Flame mahogany veneer covers the body and stepped lid, which culminates in a carved acanthus leaf finial. Elaborately carved lion paw feet support the structure, while stepped mouldings frame the base and a small circular keyhole escutcheon sits centrally on the front. Measuring 68 cm high, 90 cm wide and 60 cm deep, the piece offers substantial proportions typical of early 19th-century English dining furniture. Homeowners today can place this wine cooler in a dining room as a traditional bottle store or display it in a living space as a decorative occasional chest and storage box.

A sarcophagus wine cooler, also known as a cellarette, is a piece of dining room furniture popular during the Georgian and Regency periods, designed in the tapered shape of an ancient sarcophagus to store wine bottles and ice.

Georgian wine coolers were constructed primarily from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, and were traditionally lined with lead or zinc to hold ice and protect the surrounding timber from water damage.

Authentic 19th-century cellarettes feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, genuine flame mahogany veneers, hand-carved classical motifs such as acanthus leaves or paw feet, and original brass fittings or locks.

A sarcophagus wine cooler functions as a statement accent piece in a formal dining room, hallway, or study, placed independently against a wall or alongside other period timber furniture.

Maintain mahogany by keeping it away from direct heat sources and harsh sunlight to avoid timber shrinkage or veneer lifting, and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically along the grain.
