This nineteenth-century Chinese elm side table is a Qing Dynasty console table finished in a warm brown timber colour with a planked top. The piece includes three drawers arranged with two larger side drawers and one smaller central drawer, fitted with later looped brass drop handles, a shaped apron, and straight square tapered legs. Visible details include an old sliced repair to one leg commensurate with age and signs of old treated worm damage characteristic of the susceptible elm timber. The console table measures 80 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. Practical for everyday use, this versatile table fits well beside the front door in a hallway to hold everyday essentials like keys and mail, or functions as a decorative surface in a living room or dining area.

Nineteenth-century Chinese provincial furniture is characterised by functional designs using regional timbers such as elm, pine, and cypress. Crafted mainly during the Qing Dynasty, these pieces emphasize practical forms, subtle aprons, and traditional joinery designed for daily domestic use.

These tables were primarily built using solid hardwoods or native softwoods like elm (Yumu), joined without nails using intricate mortise-and-tenon craftsmanship. Decorative drawer pulls and hardware were typically forged from brass or paktong alloy.

Authentic pieces feature complex hand-cut joinery, signs of natural timber shrinkage along panel seams, and historical wear around handles and foot bases. Original patination and hand-carved details on the aprons or drawer fronts also signal authenticity.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway to create a focal point, paired with a modern wall mirror or contemporary art piece above. The clean lines and natural timber tones blend seamlessly with minimal, transitional, or eclectic design schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and periodically applying a natural beeswax polish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent the wood from warping or splitting.
