Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Victorian scientific instrument is a Negretti and Zambra theodolite mounted on a tall three-legged tripod stand. The piece brings a distinctive gentleman's library aesthetic to an empty corner in a home today. The construction combines warm brown mahogany timber with polished brass and gunmetal steel components, creating a handsome contrast between the dark wood and the gleaming metallic fittings. The optical telescope rests above calibrated degree dials and spirit bubble levels, supported by slender tapering legs with pointed brass ferrules at the base and pivoted metal joints at the summit. The whole assembly stands 160 cm high, 91 cm wide and 91 cm deep. Natural grain variations and warm honey-brown tones show across the wooden surfaces, while the metal mechanisms display fine adjusting screws and delicate graduated scales.

FAQs

A theodolite is a precision optical instrument engineered to measure horizontal and vertical angles in surveying, meteorology, and civil engineering fields.

Historic theodolites were predominantly constructed from solid brass and gunmetal for non-magnetic optical stability, paired with dense hardwoods such as mahogany or teak for tripod bases.

Authentic period instruments feature hand-engraved maker signatures, precise vernier scale graduations, natural patination on brass components, and original glass spirit levels.

An antique floor-standing theodolite functions as a sculptural accent piece when placed in a study corner, beside an office desk, or near a window focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the aged patination from the brass components and wooden surfaces.
