This French decorative side table, dating from 1910 in the French Chateau style, is constructed from timber with a painted wooden finish in light grey. The piece has a tray top with raised edges and faux bamboo turned legs joined by a central X-frame stretcher, which features a small turned finial at the intersection. The paintwork displays a distressed finish with visible wear and lighter patches showing through the grey surface. Measuring 71 cm high, 37 cm wide and 37 cm deep, it provides a compact surface for everyday use. In a contemporary home, this side table works well placed at the end of a sofa in a living room, or positioned in a narrow hallway or compact corner as a surface for a lamp or small decorative items.

Faux bamboo furniture became popular in France during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, driven by the widespread fascination with Asian design during the Japonisme movement. Craftsmen carved European hardwoods to resemble natural bamboo nodes, creating lightweight yet elegant occasional tables for formal and casual reception spaces.

These side tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or pine, turned on a lathe to simulate bamboo internodes. The frame components were secured using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, often reinforced with cross stretchers, before being painted, varnished, or gilded.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved turning details rather than uniform machine mouldings, traditional wooden pegged joints, and genuine surface wear. Painted examples often display multiple historic paint layers or gentle chipping around high-touch areas such as edges and feet.

Position the table alongside a tailored sofa or armchair to add height and architectural detail. Its slender silhouette makes it suitable for displaying a single table lamp, framed art, or small botanical arrangements without cluttering a room layout.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft lint-free cloth. Avoid applying harsh chemical sprays or water, which can damage original paint layers, and keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage or paint flaking.
