Carved rosettes on the square blocks: traditional decorative relief work.
Woven cane lower shelf: classic French occasional table design.
Layered painted surface: signs of natural domestic use over time.

This 1920 Louis XVI style side table is finished in an off-white paint over wood, complemented by a cane undertier. The piece takes a circular form, standing upon four slender fluted legs that terminate in bulbous feet with pointed tips. Carved rosettes adorn the blocks at the top of each leg beneath the moulded rim of the top tier, while a central turned column adds structural detail to the lower shelf. The table is 77 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this French chateau piece serves as a practical surface for displaying decorative items, holding a reading lamp, or resting a cup of coffee. It fits well into an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or bedroom, bringing a classical touch to traditional and eclectic interiors alike.

FAQs

A gueridon is a small, circular accent table originating in 17th-century France, traditionally designed to hold candelabras, floral displays, or decorative items.

These tables were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, beech, or walnut, often featuring painted or gilded wood finishes, hand-carved mouldings, and woven cane undertiers.

Authentic pieces generally display traditional joinery such as mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-carved architectural details like fluting and rosettes, and natural wear to the painted surface exposing underlying wood or gesso.

A painted gueridon works effectively as a compact end table beside a sofa, a bedside table, or as a standalone plant stand in a hallway corner paired with a potted fern or table lamp.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical solvents that could damage the painted finish. Keep the woven cane shelf free from moisture and direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
