19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this exquisite Victorian circa 1880 revolving flamed mahogany with hand dyed brown leather top “Rent” table.

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

This is an exceptionally fine piece of antique furniture indeed. The originals date back to the late 18th century circa 1780 and retail around the £40,000 mark, this is a mid-Victorian piece so approximately 80 years later. It is very finely made with flamed mahogany; the hand dyed brown leather top has a wonderful patination. The table rotates as mentioned and has the traditional drop box in the top for depositing “The rent”.

In terms of the condition, we have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, there will be normal age and use related marks here and there, mostly it’s in very fine order throughout.

This Victorian rent drum table is formed from flamed mahogany and stands on a rectangular pedestal base. The circular top carries a hand-dyed brown leather writing surface bordered by blind tooling, surrounding a central square hatch with a keyhole. Around the revolving drum are alphabetised drawers fitted with round brass pull handles, showing normal age and use related marks from cleaning, waxing and polishing. The entire piece measures 76 cm high, 96.5 cm wide and 96.5 cm deep. Placed in a gentleman's library or a home study, this desk functions as a practical writing table and a distinctive centrepiece. The rotating mechanism allows access to the drawers from multiple seating positions around the room. The warm brown timber tones and traditional lettering integrate naturally with period seating and traditional furnishings.

FAQs

A rent table is a circular table introduced in the eighteenth century, designed with alphabetised or numbered drawers around the perimeter to organise tenant rent payments and property documentation.

These tables are traditionally constructed using mahogany or walnut timbers, featuring gold-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass drawer handles, and internal oak linings.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, operational revolving mechanism hardware, period-correct drawer lettering or numbering, and age-appropriate wear to the timber and leather.

A rent table functions effectively as a focal centrepiece in an office, library, or entrance hall, serving as a functional writing desk or display platform for books and ceramics.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, and clean the leather surface using specialised leather cream away from direct heat sources.
