This large German Dresden centrepiece from 1880 comes in the Rococo Revival style, fashioned from porcelain with enamel colours and gold leaf highlights. The object takes the form of a reticulated lattice bowl supported by a central column, which is heavily embellished with applied figures and floral encrustations including pink, yellow, and white roses amid green foliage. Two maidens and two cherubs stand around the base, featuring painted facial expressions and detailed garments in green and purple, resting upon a gilded rocaille-moulded foot. The piece measures 49 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item sits as a dining table centrepiece, adding decorative interest to a room styled with traditional French Chateau influences. It suits placement upon a large dining table, a sideboard, or a display cabinet where its intricate figurative work and openwork lattice bowl remain visible from multiple angles. The porcelain construction requires careful placement away from high-traffic zones to preserve the delicate applied petals and the open basket rim.

Dresden porcelain refers to decorative ceramic items produced in or near Dresden, Germany, starting in the late 19th century. These pieces are characteristically elaborate, incorporating Rococo Revival motifs, intricate lattice handiwork, and hand-painted figures or floral appliques.

These compotes were crafted using hard-paste porcelain fired at high temperatures to achieve a dense, translucent structure. Decorative elements like lattice reticulation, cherubs, and dimensional flowers were individually hand-moulded, applied, hand-painted with enamels, and highlighted with gilded accents.

Authentic pieces typically feature factory or decorator blue underglaze marks on the base, such as crowns, crossed swords, or specific maker initials. Genuine antique examples also exhibit detailed hand-painted features, delicate hand-modelled floral petals, and high-grade gilding showing light natural wear.

An ornate Dresden centrepiece serves as a focal point on a formal dining table, sideboard, or foyer console table. Pair it with minimalistic tableware or neutral tablecloths to allow the complex figural work and vibrant colours of the porcelain to stand out.

Dust the delicate floral encrustations regularly with a soft, natural-bristle brush or air duster. Avoid immersion in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as water can weaken old repairs and strip hand-painted enamels or gilding.
