German Schierholz Porcelain Centrepiece With Cherubs, C.1907

£400    $534    €467
A fine German porcelain centrepiece attributed to the Plaue manufactory of C. G. Schierholz & Sohn, c.1907. The design features an open Rococo basket carried by two cherubs standing on scrolling feet. The basket bears painted floral sprigs, and the exterior is wrapped with a garland of applied roses in pink, yellow and violet tones.

The modelling of the cherubs is typical of Plaue’s refined sculptural idiom, while the applied-flower work is characteristic of the factory’s highly skilled female artisans, each petal shaped and shaded by hand.

Historical Background

Schierholz was one of the leading German centres for sculptural porcelain at the turn of the century. Its close relationships with several princely households helped establish its reputation for complex centrepieces, figural garnitures and sophisticated applied decoration.
