This folk art duck decoy dates from circa 1930 and belongs to the Highland Hunting Lodge style. Made from carved pine with smooth body contours, it has a black painted finish complemented by a grey painted bill featuring dark markings. The carved details include inset eyes and wing feathers deeply incised into the back, creating texture and form alongside faint white paint highlights on the wings and minor chips in the pigment. The piece measures 35 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. The base retains its original fixing for ballast or tether alongside a painted patch showing where it previously sat on a stand. In a contemporary home, this decoy is suited for display on a mantelpiece or a bookshelf, bringing a traditional sporting character to an interior. The tactile qualities of the carved plumage and the aged painted surface lend an authentic decorative presence to studies, living rooms, or hallways. It integrates well within rustic or coastal decorating schemes, serving as a standalone sculptural object that reflects historical wildfowling traditions without requiring additional ornamentation.

Carved wooden duck decoys were originally functional tools crafted by hunters to lure wild waterfowl within range. Over time, these objects transitioned from practical hunting apparatus into recognised items of folk art.

Traditional duck decoys were predominantly carved from lightweight, workable woods such as pine, cedar, or white wood. They were subsequently finished with oil- or lead-based paints to withstand exposure to water and weather.

Authentic period decoys typically display tool marks from hand carving, natural wood shrinkage, and honest wear to the painted surface, particularly around the head and base. Weighting lead inserts or tie-rigging eyes on the underside also indicate functional historical use.

A carved duck decoy functions well as a sculptural accent on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard. Pairing the item with textured timber, leatherbound books, or neutral ceramics highlights its organic form and graphic silhouette.

To preserve the original paint layer, dust the item gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or wax polishes, and store the object away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity variations.
