The Fine Art Fund has dated this Antique Rosewood Library Table to the 19th Century.
As one would imagine for something made regardless of cost, this table is very well made indeed, with two absolutely vast symmetrical sections of exotic bookmatched rosewood used for the top, which is an absolute joy to behold. The turned support is solid rosewood decorated with stylised tulip and reeded decoration. The roundels on each end, also of solid rosewood, are typical of designs by Seddon. There are casters recessed in the solid rosewood feet, the feet with a variation of the tulip design found on the stretcher. The turned section above each foot is also a typical Seddon design. The exceptional construction of the table continues with the use of mahogany for the underside and drawer linings, very crisp turning and carving and precision dovetails or tenons at every join and false drawers to the reverse side. Being narrow in depth, tall for the period, and freestanding, this table would be very useful as a sofa table, library table or writing table whilst being thin enough to use as a side table against the wall in a hallway, dining or drawing room. The locks are stamped "J. Child". Despite its elegant appearance, this table is extremely heavy, a testament to the exceptional construction and the very dense grained exotic timbers from which it was made.
