Victorian Octagonal Occasional Table, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A charming and unusual late Victorian octagonal occasional table, dating to circa 1880, with a beautifully contrasting reddish-brown timber top and ebonised turned base.

The octagonal top has a moulded edge and retains a warm, rich colour, displaying attractive natural grain and character.

Raised on four finely turned, ring-decorated legs with an unusual ebonised finish, united by four similarly turned stretchers meeting at a distinctive central finial. The elaborate bobbin turning is particularly decorative and gives the table a striking architectural quality.

A delightful example of late Victorian craftsmanship, combining decorative detailing with elegant proportions. Its compact size makes it particularly suitable as a lamp table, occasional table or decorative piece beside an armchair.

In good antique condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period.

Date of Manufacture

Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this Victorian Octagonal Occasional Table to the 1880s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Closely spaced ring turnings: typical of late Victorian Aesthetic movement design.
Ebonised base under a polished top: popular two-tone fashion of the period.
Turned centre boss uniting cross stretchers: standard late nineteenth-century construction.
Gentle rubbing through the black finish on edges: honest handling over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Victorian bobbin-turned furniture, popular during the late 19th century, is characterised by decorative lathe-turned legs featuring a repeating series of rounded, sphere-like beads reminiscent of wooden thread bobbins.

These tables were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring ebonised turned wood components to contrast with the polished timber surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display traditional construction techniques, including hand-turned turnery with minor asymmetrical variations, historic underside wear, and hand-fitted cross stretchers.

An occasional table functions effectively as an accent piece beside an armchair, placed in a hallway corner, or used as a plant stand to introduce historical texture into modern rooms.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber finish while avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners.
