Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Medullary rays across the quarter-sawn oak: timber selection of the early twentieth century.
Geometric octagonal outline with recessed shelves: British modernist design of the 1930s.
Arched cutaways on the upright plinth feet: standard inter-war cabinet styling.
Gentle rubbing and darkened polish along the corners: decades of careful domestic handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Deco Heal's style book table dates from circa 1930 and exemplifies the geometric clarity of the period. Fashioned from solid oak with a dark brown finish, the piece reveals distinctive figured grain patterns across its surfaces and vertical panel supports. The design includes an octagonal top above two open lower shelves and three flat upright partitions, creating a tiered multi-level structure with clean right-angled edges and a rope-twist border beneath the upper rim. General wear and surface marks are visible across the timber consistent with age and use. Standing 61 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this occasional table functions well at the end of a sofa to store books and magazines while providing a display surface in a modern living space.

FAQs

Popularised in the 1920s and 1930s by makers such as Heal & Son, an Art Deco book table is a compact occasional table featuring integrated open shelving designed to store books alongside a top surface for lamps or beverages.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid oak or walnut, often featuring quarter-sawn timber displaying distinct medullary rays, combined with strong geometric joinery.

Authentic pieces from this era exhibit clean geometric forms, octagonal or circular tops, solid construction methods like hand-cut joints, and clear timber grain without heavy carved ornamentation.

Position the table next to an armchair in a reading nook or living room, styling the top with a contemporary lamp and placing curated hardbacks on the lower open shelves.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping along the grain to protect the finish and prevent timber drying.
