Exceptional George III Mahogany Circular Lamp Table, Late 18th Century

18th century
Description

A Quite Exceptional Quality And Extremely Elegant Late 18th Century Sheraton Period George III Mahogany Lamp Table, Having Superbly Figured Circular Tilting Top, With Satinwood Crossbanded Decoration, Raised On Turned Central Column Featuring Reeded Decoration, Terminating On Extremely Elegant Splayed Legs With Fluted Decoration And Original Brass Cup Castors.

Its quite difficult to explain just how exceptionally made this little centre table actually is. One thing is for sure, it has clearly been constructed in one of the very best cabinet making workshops of the late 18th century and every last detail has been thought of. The timbers are incredibly well figured and almost certainly the highest grade of mahogany which was available and therefore they retain a quite exceptional colour and patina to this day.

Other classy and sophisticated features are the reeded decoration to the central column which combines extremely cleverly with the fluted decoration on the extremely elegant sabre legs.

It is also worth noting that the table is slightly larger than the average occasional table, or lamp table, of this period and this was clearly something which was very deliberate. As a result the table stands with incredible presence and poise in a whole variety of different settings.

The circular tilting top makes it an extremely practical and versatile piece of furniture, which could be used in a whole variety of different places around the home. It would make a superb occasional table alongside a sofa or armchair, a particularly attractive lamp table in a drawing room or library, or even a small centre table in a hallway. Despite its considerable age, the relatively simple and elegant design would also allow it to sit very comfortably in a more contemporary interior.

Overall, a quite exceptional quality late 18th century table, combining superb craftsmanship, wonderfully elegant proportions and a fantastic original colour and surface. A particularly fine example of the sophisticated furniture being produced by the very best English cabinetmakers during the Sheraton period.

As with all our antique furniture, this table has been attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring it is structurally sound and ready for everyday use. It has also received an appropriate natural wax polish and is ready to be placed straight into the home.

George III furniture, dating from 1760 to 1820, is characterized by classical proportions, refined turnings, balanced symmetry, and the predominant use of high-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany.

Tables from this period were crafted primarily from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often incorporating turned or fluted stems, hand-cut joinery, and brass box castors or caps on the leg terminals.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-craftsmanship, including irregular underside hand-planing, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-cut dovetails on the block, and slight timber shrinkage across the circular top.

Position the table beside tailored modern upholstery or within an alcove, pairing the deep mahogany tone with contemporary ceramics or textured table lamps to create a balanced contrast of eras.

Maintain mahogany by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent drying, and dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth.
