18th Century Mahogany Spider Leg Occasional Table

18th century
Description

A Charming 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Drop Leaf Occasional Table, Of Rectangular Form, Having Superbly Figured Top Retaining Exceptional Colour And Patina Throughout, Over One Frieze Drawer And Elegant Turned Supports Forming Rare Spider Leg Action.

This beautiful 18th century table is constructed from superb mahogany timbers, which have clearly been cherished and looked after over the years, resulting in an absolutely fabulous colour & patina.

The term spider leg action of course refers to the turned upright supports, of which there are eight, like a spider, hence the name. These asre all extremely nicely turned and are very, very elegant with breaks or repairs to speak of, which is pretty unusual.

This design of 18th century table was copied a lot during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, so it is unusual to find a genuine 18th century example, especially in the kind of condition that this one is.

Aside from being very beautiful, this table is of course incredibly functional. With the drop flap sides, it can be easily tucked away into a small space, pretty much anywhere around the home when not in use, to be brought out and opened up as and when required. There is also of course the versatility of being able to use it with just one flap up.

As with all items we offer for sale this table has been inspected by our trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in tip top condition before being offered for sale.

This Georgian occasional table from the 18th century takes a rectangular form with a drop-leaf mechanism and a single frieze drawer fitted with a brass drop ring handle. Constructed from dark brown mahogany timbers with a polished finish, the piece features eight slender turned upright supports known as spider legs, connected by detailed turned stretchers and terminating in small turned feet. The figured top retains a rich patina, complemented by smooth mouldings around the drawer front and visible wood grain throughout the drop leaves and frame. Measuring 69 cm in height with a depth of 69 cm, and a width ranging from 28 cm with flaps down to 76 cm with flaps up, this compact table fits neatly at the end of a sofa or in narrow hallways. Homeowners can use the drop-leaf surface fully extended for drinks and books, or partially folded down against a wall in smaller living spaces when floor area is limited.

A spider leg table is an 18th-century style of light drop-leaf table characterised by exceptionally slender turned legs and interconnected stretchers, originating during the Georgian period.

These tables were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany or walnut, featuring mortise-and-tenon joinery, turned legs, and brass drop handles on small frieze drawers.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber surfaces, original rule joints along the hinged drop leaves, hand-cut dovetails on frieze drawers, and natural patination across the wood.

Given its compact footprint and collapsible leaves, this style functions as an occasional side table beside a sofa, an entryway accent, or a bedside surface.

Regularly dust with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax along the grain periodically, avoiding direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
