This George III occasional table takes an unusual form in dark brown solid mahogany, dating from around 1790. The circular top displays rich figuring and a small impressed letter 'D', finished with a flat back carrying a raised upstand and surrounded by a brass moulded edge. Below the top sits a turned tapering central column that meets three downswept tripod legs ending in brass caps over ball feet. Natural timber grain shows through the polished finish, alongside minor marks and patination from age. At 65 cm high, this compact piece fits neatly at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a sitting room to hold drinks or books.

Emerging in 18th-century Britain, George III tripod tables typically feature a central turned column supported by three downswept or cabriole legs, designed for mobility and versatile placement within Georgian drawing rooms.

Primary timbers included solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and durability, frequently complemented by cast brass feet, brass castors, or metallic gallery edging.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery beneath the top, natural timber shrinkage over centuries resulting in slightly non-circular tops, and original brass hardware displaying age-appropriate patination.

These compact accent pieces function effectively as drink stands alongside upholstered armchairs, bedside tables in modern guest rooms, or discreet display surfaces in narrow hallways.

Maintain the polished surface by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax once or twice a year, and keeping the item away from direct heat sources and damp conditions.
