This Victorian mahogany and brass magazine stand or Canterbury combines a polished mahogany platform with an ebony-strung moulded edge and four brass framed and railed divisions to the top for storing magazines or sheet music, alongside an arched top division to the centre forming a carrying handle. The top section sits on a short turned pedestal with tripod foot to the base, the legs of the tripod strung with ebony to match the platform. The piece measures 96.5 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa or in a study, this Victorian magazine rack provides practical storage for periodicals and sheet music while adding a traditional touch to interior spaces. The design incorporates warm brown and gold tones with brass dividers, a turned column, cabriole legs, and an arched handle.

Victorian magazine stands developed in the nineteenth century, evolving from earlier music stands and Canterburys, to store newspapers, periodicals, and sheet music in domestic drawing rooms.

These pieces typically combine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood with metalwork frames crafted from cast or tubular brass.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned central columns, dovetailed timber joints, threaded brass fixings, and natural patinated surface wear rather than modern uniform finishes.

Position the stand adjacent to an armchair, sofa, or desk to store modern publications, art books, or loose papers while adding historical texture to contemporary schemes.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, while buffing the brass gently with a soft cloth to avoid removing historical surface patina.
