This 19th century Louis XV Revival occasional table is made from walnut and satinwood in a warm brown colour with brass mounts. The square piece has four rounded drop-flap leaves with floral marquetry inlay, ebonised folds, and a central inlaid top, supported by four slender cabriole legs. When fully extended, the table measures 74 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 94 cm deep. In a modern home, this table provides a practical surface for everyday use. It sits well at the end of a sofa or in a living room corner as a decorative side table, holding lamps, drinks, or books while adding French Chateau character to the interior.

Marquetry gained prominent status in 17th and 18th century France before experiencing a major revival throughout the 19th century, particularly during the Second Empire and Third Republic eras. Craftsmen utilised intricate wood marquetry inlays featuring floral motifs, foliate scrollwork, and geometric borders to ornament small occasional tables and salon furniture.

These tables are constructed using a solid timber core layered with contrasting decorative veneers such as walnut, satinwood, kingwood, and rosewood. The decorative pattern is pieced together using thin timber veneers, often complemented by brass edge mouldings, ebonised borders, and cabriole legs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display subtle hand-sawing marks, hand-cut joinery, and natural timber oxidisation on secondary woods and unfinished underside surfaces. Inspecting for genuine brass fittings with age-appropriate patination and observing minor natural movement in the veneer work helps confirm period origin.

Position the table as a focal accent alongside contemporary upholstered furniture to create visual contrast between traditional detailed woodwork and clean modern textiles. Its compact proportions make it suitable for placement beside an armchair, within a hallway, or in a reading alcove.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to maintain moisture in the wood. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources, radiators, and bright sunlight to prevent the thin veneers from lifting or suffering discolouration.
