Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian French Rococo Revival centre table dates from 1860. Constructed from walnut and exotic wood inlays with ormolu mounts, the freestanding piece displays a warm brown palette with contrasting dark timber tones and metallic gold highlights. The serpentine shaped top features intricate parquetry and marquetry inlay bounded by an ornate brass ormolu edge. The frieze incorporates further marquetry decoration and a single drawer, supported by curved cabriole legs finished with ornate ormolu mounts, beading, and elegant sabots. It stands 74.5 cm high, 121.5 cm wide, and 77.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative table serves as a striking centrepiece in a principal reception room or study. It functions well as a display surface for decorative objects or as a freestanding writing table positioned centrally within a spacious interior.

FAQs

A French marquetry centre table is a freestanding piece of furniture finished on all sides, designed to sit in the middle of a room. It features intricate decorative wood veneers, known as marquetry and parquetry, often depicting geometric, floral, or scrollwork motifs accompanied by gilded bronze or brass mounts.

These tables typically utilize a solid wood core overlaid with thin veneers of contrasting timber such as walnut, rosewood, kingwood, and fruitwoods. Decorative accents frequently include cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts fitted along the edges, aprons, and cabriole legs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut marquetry veneers, hand-chased metal ormolu mounts affixed with period-appropriate screws, and natural age-related patination on the woodwork and brass. The underside often shows original tool marks and hand-finished timber joinery.

A French marquetry centre table functions well in a spacious entrance hall, a formal drawing room, or as a focal point in a modern living space. Placing simple glass accessories or contemporary ceramics on the top creates a balanced contrast against the detailed woodwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to protect the wood veneer. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on metal ormolu mounts, and position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or warping.
