Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This huge Georgian oak wake table exemplifies traditional English country house dining furniture. Solid oak planks form the large oval drop-leaf top, finished in a warm brown timber colour with visible grain variations and age-related surface texture. Drop-leaf sides extend the surface area, supported by intricate gateleg frames and turned uprights. Heavy box stretchers connect the base legs, which terminate in carved foot details. The table stands at a practical height of 76 cm with an overall length of 210 cm, providing substantial surface area for gatherings. Suitable as a primary dining table in a large kitchen, breakfast room, or dining hall, this piece accommodates multiple settings for daily meals and family entertaining in a modern interior.

FAQs

A wake table is a large drop-leaf table originally created in 18th-century Ireland, traditionally designed to hold a coffin during a wake while remaining functional as a large dining surface.

Traditional wake tables are constructed from solid native timber, predominantly oak or mahogany, using pegged mortise and tenon joinery and hinged gateleg mechanisms to support the hinged leaves.

Authentic period wake tables display hand-planed surfaces, wooden peg construction rather than modern screws, hand-turned legs, and uneven wear or patination along the drop-leaf rule joints.

A wake table functions as a central dining table paired with modern or upholstered dining chairs, or can be positioned against a wall with its leaves folded down to serve as a substantial console or sideboard.

Maintain the surface by applying beeswax polish periodically in the direction of the wood grain, keeping the table away from direct heat sources, and immediately wiping away moisture to prevent damage to the timber patination.
