Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Rounded pad feet on turned tapering legs: mid-eighteenth-century design.
Rule joints along the leaves: standard cabinet-maker construction for flush-folding tops.
Wide single-piece timber leaves: sourced from mature old-growth mahogany.
Mellow amber tone across the surfaces: natural fading from centuries of light.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Drop-leaf tables emerged in sixteenth-century England as space-saving furniture designed for flexible living spaces. They feature a fixed central top with one or two hinged leaves that drop down when not required, allowing the table to be positioned against a wall or extended for dining.

During the Georgian era, cabinetmakers primarily constructed drop-leaf tables from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak. The structural joints utilized traditional mortise and tenon joinery, while iron rule-joint hinges were employed to seamlessly join the leaves to the main tabletop.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut rule joints along the table edges, hand-forged iron hinges with original iron screws, and hand-planed underside surfaces. Legs often feature pad feet or turned details, with natural timber shrinkage visible along the grain lines.

A drop-leaf table provides compact dining solutions in small apartments or breakfast nooks. When folded, it functions as a console or side table, while pairing it with modern dining chairs creates an eclectic contrast between historical timber and contemporary design.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
