This Georgian dining table is an 18th-century walnut gateleg table with a warm brown timber colour and visible grain variations. The oval drop-leaf top has rule joint edges and rests upon turned wooden legs and a joined stretcher base that provides stability. Natural wear appears across the wooden surface, including light surface marks, texture variations, and slight patination from age. The table measures 145 cm wide when open. In a modern home, this table functions as a dining table or side table in a kitchen, dining room, or living space, providing an extendable surface area when guests arrive. The drop-leaf design permits the leaves to lower for compact placement against a wall when floor space is limited. The warm timber tones coordinate with traditional or country house interiors, accommodating seating around the perimeter when fully opened.

Introduced in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, gateleg tables feature hinged flaps supported by pivoting legs. This space-saving design allowed large dining surfaces to collapse into narrow side tables when not in active use.

Early gateleg tables were predominantly constructed from solid regional hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and fruitwood. Components were typically joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery held together with wooden pegs.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples exhibit hand-turned legs, hand-cut rule joints along the table flaps, and irregular wear consistent with age. Look for original iron hinges, wooden peg fastenings, and natural patination on the timber surface.

A gateleg table serves as a flexible dining piece in smaller spaces or breakfast rooms. When collapsed, it functions effectively as a hall table or console, topped with ceramic vessels, contemporary table lamps, or floral arrangements.

Maintain the finish by regularly dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying high-quality beeswax twice yearly. Protect the wood surface from heat and moisture using coasters, and position the table away from direct sunlight or central heating sources.
