Early 20th Century Decoy Duck - No1

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This early 20th century folk art decoy duck is carved from wood and finished with a hand-painted surface. The body displays a distressed patina with flaking black and brown paint, whilst the head features patches of green pigment and a distinctively shaped bill. A pointed tail and rounded base complete the hand-shaped form, bearing the honest surface and irregularity of a working antique. The piece measures 10 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Originally produced as a functional hunting decoy, the sculpture now serves as a decorative object for the home. It suits placement on a mantelpiece, console, drapers table, or open shelf, either displayed individually or gathered together with other items. The simple form coordinates easily with both antique and contemporary interior furnishings.

Carved wooden decoy ducks were originally crafted by wildfowlers as functional tools to lure waterfowl within range during hunting. Over time, regional carving styles emerged, transforming these practical objects into recognised examples of folk art.

Decoys were typically hand-carved from lightweight, easily worked timbers such as pine, cedar, or balsa wood. They were then painted with oil-based lead paints to withstand exposure to water and weather, and often fitted with lead weights to maintain stability on open water.

Authentic period decoys generally display evidence of functional wear, such as flaking or worn paint, water marks, and historic structural repairs. Look for hand-chiselled carving marks, original paint layers showing natural crazing, and integrated rigging eyes or weighted keels beneath the body.

Decoy ducks serve as compelling sculptural accents when displayed on bookshelves, sideboards, or fireplace mantelpieces. Their organic forms and weathered textures contrast well against modern minimalist backdrops or complement traditional, country house-inspired decor.

Keep the wood in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or paint flaking. Clean gently using a soft, dry dusting brush; avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or waxes that could alter the original flaking paint or original surface patina.
