This George III elm single drawer side table dates from the Georgian period and follows an English country house style. The piece is fashioned from elm and oak in a warm brown colour with a rich patina, showing a planked figured elm top that overlaps at the sides above a single drawer base. Decorative details include a fretted shaped apron to all four sides, a turned wooden drawer knob, and slightly tapering square legs with pegged joints. The practical table measures 72.5 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 44.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this side table serves well beside the front door or in an entryway for holding keys, mail, and everyday essentials. It also functions effectively in a hallway, living room, or study as an accent surface for lamps and decorative objects while providing enclosed storage within its four-division interior.

A George III elm side table is a piece of English accent furniture crafted during the reign of King George III (17601820). Made predominantly from native English elm, these versatile tables typically feature a single utility drawer, square or tapered legs, and were designed for general household use.

18th-century elm side tables were constructed using traditional joinery techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer construction and pegged mortise and tenon joints for the main frame. Elm was favoured for its durable, interlocked grain, often combined with secondary woods like oak or pine for internal drawer construction.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, natural shrinkage, and uneven wear consistent with period usage. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged leg joints, and original timber backboards or drawer linings showing tool marks from hand saws.

A Georgian elm side table functions well as an entryway console, hallway accent, or occasional desk. Pair the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic lamps, or simple botanicals to create a balanced blend of old and new.

Maintain antique elm by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or timber movement.
