This early eighteenth-century English provincial side table brings rustic farmhouse character to a home today, positioned nicely beside the front door. Constructed from warm brown oak and elm, the piece has a three-board top above a single drawer fitted with brass drop handles, a central brass escutcheon, and a bold punch-carved waist moulding. Visible details include bobbin-turned legs joined by a matching bobbin stretcher, with signs of age and repair showing that the top was previously in three pieces before being glued back together and the underside cleaned. Practical for everyday use, the side table measures 71 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 61 cm deep.

18th-century English provincial side tables were crafted by local joiners using regional hardwoods such as oak and elm. They typically feature utilitarian designs, single drawer configurations, hand-turned legs, and stretcher supports tailored for rural domestic homes.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid English oak and elm for structural framework and tops, often utilizing brass teardrop or bail handles for hardware. Joinery relied on mortise and tenon construction secured with wooden pegs rather than modern adhesives or nails.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed surfaces, irregular drawer dovetails, hand-turned legs, and original pegged joinery. Look for natural oxidation on the interior timber and legitimate wear patterns on foot stretchers caused by historical use.

Combine dark timber surfaces with modern textured ceramics, contemporary artwork, or minimalist glass lighting. Placing an antique table against neutral walls creates visual contrast and softens modern architectural lines.

Apply high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers natural patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
