1900 - 1920
Description

An attractive early 20th century light oak side table in the Jacobean Revival style, circa 1920, with particularly pleasing colour and figuring to the timber.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean Revival style refers to late nineteenth and early twentieth-century furniture made in imitation of seventeenth-century English Renaissance designs. Characteristics include heavy oak construction, turned legs, geometric panelling, and blind arcading carvings.

Solid oak was the primary material used for these pieces, often featuring quarter-sawn grain patterns. Construction methods retained traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, complemented by turned timber legs and hand or machine-carved drawer fronts.

Twentieth-century revival pieces display uniform saw marks, standard drawer construction, and modern hardware or wood glue. Seventeenth-century originals feature hand-hewn surfaces, irregular peg joinery, heavy oxidation, and significant uneven wear around the feet and stretchers.

Position the piece as an entryway accent or living room side table alongside modern upholstered seating. Contrast the textured wood grain with clean architectural lines, contemporary artwork, and brushed brass lighting.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and liquid spills to preserve the timber finish.
