Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinese provincial side table dates from 1900 and uses pale elm wood with a bleached finish. It stands on rounded legs joined by double stretchers and visible mortise and tenon joinery, supporting a flush panel top. The timber shows natural grain variations and pale honey tones, with smooth rounded mouldings running horizontally beneath the top and along the lower frame. Overall dimensions are 83 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Suitable as a hall, console, pier, or side table, the piece sits comfortably at the end of a sofa in a living room, hallway, or study. Its clean lines and neutral timber grain suit both contemporary and traditional interiors, providing a practical surface for display or daily use without cluttering the floor space.

FAQs

Chinese elm side tables originate from traditional woodworking practices, predominantly in Northern China where elm timber (yumu) was widely available. These pieces were crafted as functional furniture for domestic interiors, ranging from scholars studios to rural homes during the Ming and Qing periods.

Traditional Chinese elm furniture is constructed using precise mortise and tenon joinery without the use of metal nails or glues. The wood is fitted together with interlocking joints, allowing the timber to expand and contract naturally with climate variations.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved mortise and tenon jointing, visible grain typical of northern elm, and signs of historical wear on high-touch areas like stretchers and legs. Original proportions follow classic Ming or Qing design principles with clean structural lines.

A Chinese elm side table can be incorporated into modern settings as a subtle textural accent alongside soft upholstered furniture. Its neutral timber finish pairs well with contemporary ceramics, minimal lighting, and natural linen textiles.

Care for unvarnished elm by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement. Periodic application of clear beeswax helps nourish the wood grain and maintain surface protection.
