Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Lacquer worn through to timber along the tray rim: long domestic handling.
Fine crazing across the japanned ground: natural shrinkage of early lacquer.
Circular cup ring marked into the black surface: honest everyday use.
Hand-painted chinoiserie scenes with raised gilding: early twentieth-century decorative work.

This Edwardian coffee table is in the Chinoiserie taste and dates from circa 1910. The piece is constructed from lacquered wood with an ebonised black and gold finish, featuring a rectangular top with a serpentine rim and cabriole legs ending in pad feet. The surface is profusely decorated with painted and gilt Chinoiserie scenes showing figures amongst willow trees, bridges and mountains, alongside gilded lattice motifs on the apron. Dimensions are 42 cm high, 57 cm wide and 40 cm deep. Place this table in a traditional living room or drawing room as a functional surface at the end of a sofa. It functions well for holding everyday items like cups, books or small decorative objects while adding historic character to an interior. The sturdy frame accommodates daily use, while the compact footprint makes it suitable for placement in smaller seating areas.

Chinoiserie emerged in 17th-century Europe as a decorative design style reflecting European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, experiencing notable revivals throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These tables are constructed from hardwood frames coated in multiple layers of black or coloured lacquer, finished with hand-painted gesso, gold leaf, or metallic gilding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-painted decoration showing fine surface craquelure, period joinery under the frame, and subtle wear to high points of the gilded raised work.

Place the table alongside neutral tailored seating or contemporary upholstered furniture, using its dark finish and gilded details to create visual contrast in a living room.

Dust the surface lightly using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding water, solvent cleaners, commercial polishes, and direct exposure to strong sunlight or radiators.
