FAQs

A netsuke is a small, hand-carved toggle developed in Japan during the Edo period. Because traditional kimono lacked pockets, personal items were suspended from the obi sash using cords, with the netsuke acting as a decorative stopper to prevent the cord from slipping.

Carvers used a variety of natural materials, most notably dense hardwoods such as boxwood, cypress, and ebony, as well as marine ivory, antler, and horn. Wood was often favoured for its warm tactile qualities and fine grain suitable for intricate carving.

Authentic period examples feature functional cord holes (himotoshi), natural age-related patina, and smooth wear patterns from handling. Signature marks (mei) from known carvers, fine surface detailing, and the natural oxidisation of the wood grain also help determine age and origin.

These tactile sculptures are best displayed under a glass cloche, within a glazed cabinet, or atop a stacked set of art books on a bookshelf. Arranging them alongside larger ceramics creates an engaging contrast in scale.

Keep wooden carvings away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity, which can cause cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush and avoid applying chemical polishes or water.
