Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique brass coal bin, historically known as a coal purdonium or scuttle, is a decorative vessel designed to store coal or firewood near a fireplace hearth. Popular throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods, these containers combined utilitarian storage with decorative metalwork.

These bins were typically constructed from sheet brass or copper, often featuring hand-hammered surface textures, cast brass feet, and decorative appliques. Most quality examples included a heavy removable galvanised zinc or iron liner to protect the outer brass body from soot and corrosion.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of genuine age, such as natural oxidisation in crevices, wear to the base, hand-riveted joints, and cast metal fittings. The presence of an original, fitted internal liner with age-appropriate patination is also a strong indicator of period construction.

An antique brass bin can be placed beside a wood-burning stove or traditional open hearth to store kindling and logs. Alternatively, it can function as a planter, umbrella stand, or decorative wastepaper receptacle in a living room or hallway.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft, dry cloth to preserve the surface patina. If a bright shine is preferred, unlacquered brass may be treated with a dedicated metal polish, while the interior metal liner should be kept dry to prevent rust formation.
