This Georgian antique treen salt cellar originates from England between 1790 and 1800, dating to the late 18th century or early 19th century. Fashioned from laburnum wood, it displays a rich dark brown colour with a polished finish, showing a natural patina and visible lathe marks. The turned open bowl shape incorporates a flat base, concentric ring decoration, a ribbed exterior with turned mouldings, and lathe-turned rings encircling the body. Measuring 5.1 cm high by 8.6 cm wide and 8.6 cm deep, this small rustic farmhouse piece fits neatly on a sideboard top for practical modern use or display. Its simple compact form suits placement in a dining room, kitchen, or living space as a decorative container or small catch-all tray for daily accessories.

Treen refers to small, functional handmade domestic items made entirely from wood, predominantly produced before the widespread adoption of metal, glass, and ceramics in the nineteenth century.

Laburnum was highly favoured by lathe turners for its strong contrast between pale sapwood and dark heartwood, dense grain, and ability to take a smooth polish.

Authentic pieces display natural signs of age including subtle shrinkage marks, subtle irregular lathe lines, deep original patina, and smooth wear around functional edges.

Small treen objects work well displayed on open kitchen shelving, styled on coffee table trays, or utilised on dressers alongside modern ceramic pieces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the wood grain, keeping it away from direct heat and excessive moisture.
