FAQs

A 19th-century mahogany writing table is a functional study desk typically crafted from solid or veneered mahogany, featuring a flat top surface, low rear gallery upstand, and frieze drawers supported by turned or tapered legs.

These tables commonly featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, solid mahogany tops or rich veneers, turned wooden drawer knobs, and hand-lathed legs connected via solid mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-cut dovetails on frieze drawers, original brass keyhole escutcheons or lock mechanisms, and a natural aged patina across the mahogany grain.

Position the piece as a compact home office desk, a hallway console table, or a bedroom vanity dressing table, paired with contemporary seating or minimalist lighting to create visual contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax paste annually to protect the timber, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and moisture.
