Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Edwardian kneehole desk takes the form of a freestanding writing table designed for a gentleman's library. Constructed from mahogany with boxwood and kingwood inlay, the piece exhibits a warm brown timber colour alongside a green leather writing surface inset into the top. Five hardwood-lined drawers are fitted with brass drop handles and keyholes, while the four square tapered legs stand on small castors. Decorative details include inlaid stringing framing the drawer fronts and shaped brackets beneath the frieze. Measuring 76 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 55 cm deep, the desk functions as a compact workspace for a study, bedroom, or home office setting.

FAQs

A kneehole desk features a recessed central space flanked by drawers or cupboards, designed to accommodate a seated users legs comfortably. Emerging in the 18th century, these desks became staple pieces in British study rooms and libraries throughout the Georgian and Edwardian eras.

Traditional kneehole desks are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often decorated with satinwood or boxwood marquetry and stringing. The writing surfaces are frequently inlaid with leather skivers, trimmed with tool work, and fitted with brass drawer pulls.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, naturally patinated brass hardware, and timber showing genuine signs of age and shrinkage. Original castors, period-appropriate keyholes, and hand-tooled leather writing surfaces also indicate historical origin.

Place the desk near a source of natural light, such as a window bay or alcove, to function as a compact home workstation. Pair it with a contemporary task lamp and an upholstered desk chair to blend historical character with modern functionality.

Clean the wood surface using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain moisture. Preserve the leather inset by avoiding direct heat sources and cleaning with a specialised leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
