Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian writing tables were popularised during the 19th century as dedicated surfaces for personal correspondence and study. They typically feature compact rectangular proportions, turned wood legs, and an inset leather surface decorated with gilt or blind tooling.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. The writing tops frequently incorporate inset hide leather secured with natural glues and edged with decorative gold leaf tooling.

Authentic 19th-century examples display evidence of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut joinery, hand-turned legs, and age-appropriate wear to the leather surface. Timber surfaces beneath the frame often show historical saw marks and subtle shrinkage across the grain.

A Victorian writing table functions effectively as a streamlined home office desk, a hallway console table, or a focal point in a living area. Pairing dark timber with modern task lighting and contemporary seating creates an engaging visual contrast.

Dust timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax annually along the grain. Protect the leather insert from direct sunlight and liquid spills, applying a specialist leather conditioner periodically to maintain flexibility.
