Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Writing Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful and quite unusual antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around 1890-1900.

This is very well made and is a useful size, the oval top has an inset tooled green leather writing surface. There are also lovely satin wood inlays around the top edge, on the drawer front, and running down the legs. The legs are tapered with spade end feet, and are supported by a stretcher for extra strength. The back is also nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

Take an enlarged look at the superb brass handles, which are original to this piece.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian writing tables are defined by their light, refined proportions compared to heavier Victorian designs, frequently incorporating mahogany timber, fine boxwood stringing, and leather-inset tops.

Traditional Edwardian furniture construction predominantly utilised mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood, often accented with brass hardware, hand-applied veneers, and leather writing surfaces.

Authentic Edwardian pieces can be identified by examining joint construction, such as hand-cut dovetails, alongside period-appropriate drawer linings, patinated brass hardware, and delicate geometric inlays.

An antique writing table can function as a compact desk in a home office, a hallway console table, or a focal point in a living area paired with contemporary lamps and artwork.

Maintain mahogany timber and leather surfaces by positioning the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying natural beeswax to the timber annually, and wiping the leather insert with a dry cloth.
