Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This late Georgian mahogany wine cooler or plant jardiniere dates from 1800 and exemplifies English Country House style. The piece presents a warm brown timber finish and is bound by dual brass hoops, accompanied by detailed brass lion mask ring handles and a removable metal liner inside its oval body. The oval basin rests on a four-legged stand featuring square tapered legs and simple wooden framing beneath the tub. Measuring 59 cm high, 67 cm wide and 49 cm deep, this item functions practically in a home today as a decorative planter or wine holder placed in an empty corner.

FAQs

Originally crafted in the 18th and early 19th centuries, mahogany wine coolers, or cellarettes, were designed to hold ice and chill wine bottles during dining room service in wealthy households.

Georgian wine coolers were typically constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, bound with heavy brass hoops, and fitted with a internal lead or zinc liner to protect the timber frame from condensation.

Authentic late Georgian pieces feature hand-cut joinery, square tapered or splayed legs, period cast lion-mask side handles, and natural age-related patination on both the timber surface and brass bindings.

In contemporary decor, antique wine coolers frequently serve as distinctive indoor plant containers, freestanding architectural accent pieces, or decorative storage for fireplace logs.

Maintain the mahogany timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain, while dusting the brass hoops gently without harsh chemical polish to preserve historical patination.
