Regency Mahogany Wine Cooler

19th century
Description

A good example of an early 19th Century mahogany cellarette or wine cooler of sarcophagus form with carved lions paw feet and the original castors below. The interior retains its original zinc lining and cork bung. It is an excellent quality piece with richly figured timbers and panelled sides.

A functional piece for storing or serving wine but also a great planter or just a lovely decorative object in its own right.

It is in good condition for its age with a lovely patina. It is strong and sturdy and the interior is generally clean and tidy. There are some signs of age and use, some minor marks and knocks but nothing untoward or detrimental. It has been cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

This Regency mahogany wine cooler exemplifies early 19th Century craftsmanship in a traditional sarcophagus form. The piece uses rich, warm brown flame mahogany timbers with panelled sides, reeded trim, and a tapered profile, complemented by an original zinc-lined interior featuring a cork bung. Detailed carving appears on the solid carved lion's paw feet, which sit above castors. Measuring 47 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, the furniture functions practically for storing or serving wine, works well as a planter, or serves as a decorative object. Placed in an empty corner, it integrates into domestic spaces today, offering sturdy construction with a polished finish and natural signs of age, including minor marks and knocks.

A Regency wine cooler, also known as a cellarette or sarcophagus, is a dining room receptacle designed in the early 19th century to hold ice and keep wine bottles cool during meals.

Antique cellarettes were commonly crafted from mahogany wood with interior linings of zinc or lead to hold ice and liquid without deteriorating the surrounding timber structure.

Authentic Regency examples display period characteristics such as hand-carved paw feet, flame mahogany veneers, hand-soldered interior linings, and natural surface oxidisation on the timber.

An antique wine cooler can be styled as a floor-standing accent piece, positioned in a dining alcove, or repurposed as a planter for indoor foliage.

Maintain the piece by applying natural beeswax polish to the mahogany surfaces, keeping the item away from direct heat sources, and ensuring the metal interior remains dry.
