This Edwardian wine cooler combines a removable solid brass bucket with a basket-shaped mahogany stand, dating from around 1900. The bucket has a polished brass finish and features a curved swing handle, whilst the dark brown stand is constructed with vertical slats supported by three curved splayed legs. Decorative brass lion mask mounts with linked chains adorn the exterior of the slatted body, matching the original hardware. The piece measures 48 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, with the bucket measuring 27.5 cm in diameter and 24 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece suits placement in a gentleman's library or an empty corner, serving as a wine cooler or alternatively as a jardinière for house plants. The traditional materials and classic Edwardian styling allow it to function as a decorative standalone furnishing or a practical receptacle within living spaces or studies.

FAQs

An Edwardian wine cooler, also known as a cellarette or wine cistern, is a dedicated piece of dining room furniture produced between 1901 and 1910. Designed to hold ice and keep wine bottles chilled during formal meals, these items often incorporated removable metal liners within wood frames.

Traditional wine coolers from the 18th to early 20th centuries were typically constructed using hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. The interior liners were crafted from metals like brass, zinc, or lead to contain ice and moisture without damaging the wooden exterior.

Authentic Edwardian pieces feature turn-of-the-century construction methods, including hand-finished joinery, cast brass hardware such as lion mask handles, and age-appropriate patination on metal liners. The proportion of the turnings and splayed leg designs reflect early 20th-century neoclassical revival styles.

A vintage wine cooler functions effectively as an accent piece in a modern dining room, hallway, or living space. Beyond its original purpose for entertaining, it can be repurposed as a decorative indoor planter or used as an umbrella stand in an entryway.

To preserve the materials, clear any moisture from the metal liner immediately after use to prevent corrosion. Clean the mahogany frame with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while using dedicated brass polish sparingly on non-patinated metal components.
