Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large set of brass post office parcel scales dates from around 1900, originating from a recently closed local post office. The piece combines a warm brown rectangular oak plinth with gold-coloured brass fittings, including a circular weight dial showing prices in pence marked with a black arrow, an engraved triangular support frame, and an elevated weighing platform. Decorative engraving adorns the brass elements. The overall construction rests upon the original wooden base, exhibiting a complete and original condition suitable for a gentleman's library or office desk. Measuring 34 cm high and 23 cm wide, the scales present a practical footprint for display and use in a modern home study. The design integrates traditional postal hardware with visible makers' stamps and functional mechanical components. Collectors and enthusiasts of antique postal history can place this item upon a desk or surface to serve as a decorative and historically interesting desk accessory within a home interior.

FAQs

Postal scales were mechanical devices designed to determine accurate postage tariffs based on the weight of letters and packages in commercial post offices and private desks.

These instruments were manufactured predominantly from solid brass for components requiring precision, mounted upon solid hardwood bases such as oak, mahogany, or walnut.

Authentic period scales feature stamped weight markings, naturally aged metal surfaces, traditional slotted screw fixings, and calibrated balance mechanisms appropriate to their era.

An antique postal scale functions as a decorative tabletop object, styled on a study desk, sideboard, or bookshelf to add historical texture to the room.

Dust the brass components with a soft dry microfiber cloth to preserve the natural oxidisation, and use a light wood polish on the timber plinth without touching the metal mechanism.
