Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Taxidermy mounts gained significant popularity during the Victorian era as decorative sporting trophies and natural history displays. Mounting specimens on timber shields carved with traditional motifs, such as oak leaves and acorns, reflected the periods appreciation for woodland aesthetics and country estate traditions.

Traditional taxidermy mounts feature preserved natural animal hides and antlers set over sculpted form cores made of straw, wood-wool, or plaster. Glass eyes were incorporated for realism, and the finished specimen was typically secured onto carved hardwood backings, predominantly oak or walnut.

Authentic period taxidermy often displays hand-blown glass eyes, aged wooden mounting shields with hand-carved details, and period-specific mounting hardware on the reverse. Natural patination on the timber shield and subtle age wear to the fur lining also indicate authentic age.

Place a taxidermy wall mount above a fireplace mantlepiece, in an entryway, or alongside artwork in a curated gallery wall. Pairing natural timber mounts with contemporary neutral walls creates visual contrast and brings texture into modern rustic or classic interiors.

Keep the specimen away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources to protect the hide and wood. Dust the fur gently in the direction of hair growth using a soft-bristled brush or low-powered micro-vacuum, and inspect regularly for signs of textile pests.
